Notes: Fresh off their day off, the Red Sox open a seven-game homestand with a game against the Mariners. Seattle has lost 12 straight, going from a respectable 43-43 record (and 2.5 games out of first) to their season being in shambles because the Rangers were winning 11 in a row at the same time. Now they're 12.5 games out. ... The Mariners have scored just 27 runs in those 12 games while hitting .208/.252/.280. This is a historically bad offensive team. Seattle is last in the AL in runs, hits and OPS (.618). They average 3.2 runs per game, a pace that would generate just 528 runs for the season. The Red Sox are on a pace to score 876. ... Hernandez is 4-1, 2.87 in nine career starts against the Sox, 3-0, 1.49 in five starts at Fenway. He faced the Sox at Fenway on May 1 and allowed two runs over seven innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts, But the Sox won the game 3-2. ... Lackey has pitched fairly well of late, giving up three earned runs on 13 hits in his last 13.1 innings with two walks and 14 strikeouts. He faced Seattle on April 30 and allowed two runs over six innings in a 3-2 loss. ... Lackey is 13-10, 3.62 in 28 career starts against Seattle. ... Pedroia enters the game riding an 18-game hit streak. He has reached base safely in 30 straight games. ... The Sox have won 10 of their last 12.
Stat of the Day: Thanks to interleague play, the All-Star break and the suspension he just served, David Ortiz has had just 48 at-bats since June 24. He has hit .148 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in that stretch.
