You can tie the Red Sox to Rockies outfielder Ryan Spilborghs. The 31-year-old righthanded hitter would be a low-cost bench upgrade.

He is hitting a modest .223/.303/.324 and isn't much better against lefties (.232/.299/.377) this season. But he had a solid 2010 season and has a career .811 OPS against lefties. Given a choice, Ty Wigginton would be a better fit.

The Twins also are listening for offers for Kevin Slowey, a righthander who has appeared in only six games this season because of injury but has been an effective starter in his career.

Seattle will start Erik Bedard on Friday in what will essentially be a trade audition. He is lefthanded, has an active pulse and a career ERA of 3.64, so somebody will want him. But Bedard has made only 45 starts over the last four seasons because of various injuries.

The Sox may not do much. But their 25-man roster presently includes Darnell McDonald, Randy Williams, Drew Sutton, Yamaico Navarro and Franklin Morales. That's five places where an upgrade would not seem particularly hard to accomplish.
