David Ortiz had an MRI on his sore right heel and was fitted with a walking boot to take some weight off the area.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he does not expect Ortiz, who was diagnosed with bursitis, to go on the disabled list.

"We're going to get him out of his spikes for a couple days and get him in a little bit of a walking boot, just to kind of alleviate some of the pressure," Francona said. "We'll keep re-evaluating him every couple days, but we want to get him off that for a little while. ... We're going to have to keep him out of there for a little bit, and we don't know what that is."

On several occasions this season, the Red Sox initially said they did not expect injured players to go on the disabled list before that proved to be the result.

If Ortiz was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 15, he would be eligible to return on Aug, 30 for the series against the Yankees at Fenway Park.

Ortiz is hitting .300/.388/.557 this season with 24 home runs and 79 RBIs.
