A few readers emailed to ask how August waiver trades work. Here is an excellent breakdown of that process from Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLB Trade Rumors.

It is possible to get a helpful player via a waiver trade and quite often good players clear waivers. But the Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers and other contenders will play some cat-and-mouse games with claims to try and block their competition.

Also, it's not really news that Player X is put on waivers. Quite often teams will put most, if not all, of their players on waivers just for the sake of doing it. So the fact that a player is on waivers does not necessarily mean he's available.
