KANSAS CITY — Finally, some good news on the medical front for the Red Sox.

David Ortiz shed his walking boot today and took some swings in the cage for the first time since last Sunday in Seattle.

That seems to be ahead of the initial projections. But as Terry Francona pointed out, it was literally a day-by-day thing with his bursitis in Ortiz's right heel.

So how did it go?

"Good," Ortiz said as he walked to the trainer's room.

There is no word as of yet on when Ortiz might play. But today is certainly a good step forward.

UPDATE, 8:29 p.m.: Here is what Ortiz posted on Twitter:

"Hit in the cage today and I feel good ... I will be back soon Red Sox Nation!"
