The Red Sox had one of their first-round draft picks, catcher Blake Swihart, on the field for batting practice today. A switch hitter from Rio Rancho, N.M., Swihart swatted one off the Sports Authority above the Green Monster and was smiling widely.

Swihart was the 26th overall pick and has committed to play at the University of Texas. But the Red Sox have until Aug. 15 to try and convince him to sign.

Theo Epstein, Ben Cherington, Mike Hazen and Amiel Sawdaye were among the team officials on hand for the workout. Swihart also spent time with several of the players.

MLB's strongly suggested bonus for the 26th pick is roughly $1.2 million. It might cost the Sox more than double that to sign Swihart, who many considered one of the best catchers in the draft.
