Notes: The Red Sox start the day 4.5 games behind the Yankees (who host Minnesota this afternoon) in the division and two games ahead of the Rays (who are idle) in the wild card. ... The Sox have lost two straight and nine of 11 and are 4-13 this month. ... The Sox are 8-3 against the Orioles. ... Weiland faced the Orioles twice in July, allowing nine earned runs over 10 innings. ... Guthrie is 1-1 in three appearances against the Red Sox. He has allowed three earned runs over 16.1 innings on 18 hits and four walks with 14 strikeouts. Guthrie is 2-8, 4.41 in 18 career appearances (16 starts) against the Sox.... Lackey is 0-3 with a 7.52 ERA in his last four starts. ... Matusz, 24, showed a lot of promise last season. But he has taken a step back this season due to injury and ineffectiveness. In four starts since Aug. 16 he has allowed 28 hits and 22 earned runs over 17.1 innings. He last faced the Sox on Sept. 20, 2010. Matusz is 2-0, 2.43 in five career starts against the Sox. ... The Orioles have won seven of their last 11 games. Given his on-the-record distaste for the Red Sox, surely Buck Showalter would love to play spoiler. The Sox have won 11 of the last 16 meetings against Baltimore going back to last season.

On doubleheaders: The Sox are playing their fourth doubleheader, the third at Fenway. The first game is a makeup of from May 17. The Red Sox split a doubleheader at Detroit on May 29, split with the Rays at Fenway Park on Aug. 16 and took two from the As in Boston on Aug. 27. That also is the last time the Sox won two in a row.

Stat of the Day: The Red Sox are 12-16 in their last 28 home games and are 44-33 at home. The Sox have not won fewer than 46 games at home since 2002, when they won 42.

Song of the Day: "It Takes Two" by Marvin Gaye.
