Ortiz scratched with back spasms
David Ortiz was a surprise scratch in the bottom of the first inning tonight against the Blue Jays, being pinch hit for because of what the team announced as back spasms.
Ortiz participated fully in pregame batting practice, launching an assortment of home runs to all parts of Fenway Park. He also didn't appear to be in any discomfort before the game in the locker room.
When it was Ortiz's turn to bat in the bottom of the first, though, Jed Lowrie was announced as a pinch hitter. He struck out.
