The Yankees won, 4-2. The Sox now have a 2.5-game lead on the Rays and two in the loss column. Win tonight and it becomes awfully difficult for the Rays.

The rotation for the Yankees series is Jon Lester on Friday, Tim Wakefield on Saturday and "we've got a lot of moving parts, we'll see" on Sunday.

That could be John Lackey. That could be Alfredo Aceves. That could be ... um ... somebody else.

Clay Buchholz survived his simulated game and will throw another one either tomorrow or Friday. Manager Terry Francona said there was no chance Buchholz would be starting this season. If he returns, it would be in a bullpen role.

In other news:

Kevin Youkilis and J.D. Drew will try hitting in New York on Friday.

Dustin Pedroia is hitting fifth to try to give Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz some protection. Pedroia has never hit fifth in his career.
