Farrell a candidate until he's not

The odds of John Farrell leaving the Blue Jays after one year as manager to rejoin the Red Sox as their manager are slim.

But until Farrell says no, there is a chance.

"I have no idea and no comment on what's happening in Boston. I am focused right now on preparing for what is best for the Blue Jays in 2012," Farrell told Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca.

Notice that he never said, "No, I wouldn't do that."

Theo Epstein regarding the Cubs on Aug. 31: "I try to avoid commenting on things so speculative. I can say I'm completely focused on the Red Sox, the 2011 Red Sox first and foremost."

You see how it works.

In 100 different ways, Farrell is a perfect fit as manager. He has the kind of no-nonsense personality the team needs, he knows the organization and obviously he knows pitching. He also has a year under his belt as manager and by accounts improved steadily over the course of the season.

The Red Sox were grooming Farrell to replace Terry Francona. But when the Toronto opportunity came up, he took it because the timing worked and the Blue Jays were an organization on the rise.

But the Red Sox have to be intriguing to him. John and his wife, Sue, have a ton of friends in Boston and within the organization. On and off the field, he's the kind of person the Sox need to help guide the franchise to better times.

It's also worth noting that Farrell has been spending a lot of time in Boston of late seeing to the medical care of his son, Luke.

A 21-year-old pitcher at Northwestern, Luke Farrell had a tumor removed from his skull and is receiving post-operative treatment.

In the end, Farrell probably stays in Toronto and Ben Cherington hires his own man for the job.

But until Farrell says no, he remains a possibility.
