World Series MVP Dave Freese was nearly signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent in 2006 only to have MLB cancel the deal.

Instead the Padres drafted Freese and then traded him to the Cardinals in 2007.

Tom Krasovic of Inside the Padres has the details of how what seemed like a stroke of bad luck for Freese led to his becoming a hero in St. Louis.
