Joe McDonald, who covers the Red Sox for ESPN Boston, reports today that team has fired first base coach Ron Johnson.

Theo Epstein said last week that the coaches were basically in limbo until a new manager was hired and some would be recommended to him. Usually the team (that is, the GM) picks a few coaches and the manager picks a few.

Johnson, 55, was with the major league team for two years. He joined the Sox in 2000 as minor league manager.

There are no indications that the Red Sox will consider any of their coaches as Terry Francona's replacement.
