Matheny, not Francona, to manage Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals announced earlier today that they have hired Mike Matheny as manager.

Matheny, 40, was a minor league instructor with the Cardinals and has no managing experience. He played for St. Louis from 2000-04.

The Cardinals interviewed, among others, former Red Sox manger Terry Francona. Barring the unexpected, Francona will not manage in 2012. He is not being considered by the Cubs and no other team (other the Red Sox) has a vacancy.

It seems unlikely Francona would become a bench coach. He could work for a team as a scout or consultant while waiting for something to open up. Or he could go into television while biding his time.

It would be awfully smart of 98.5 The Sports Hub or WEEI to hire Francona as an weekly guest on one of their shows. Based on those two ALCS games he called on Fox, he would be a good analyst.
