MILWAUKEE A few quick updates:

The Cubs have offered Dale Sveum their job. The Red Sox have not. Reports are that the Cubs may be closing on Sveum.

Pete Mackanin has been told he's out of the running by the Red Sox.

The Sox seem certain to hold a second interview with one of their candidates. But that would be after the weekend. That would be Sandy Alomar Jr., Gene Lamont or Torey Lovullo.

Larry Lucchino said the Red Sox could "absolutely" open their search to other candidates. Ben Cherington agreed, but said that was not certain. The next manager could come from the group they've interviewed.

In they do open it back up, no current MLB managers would be on the list given difficulty at this point in getting permission, Cherington said.

Back with more later on.
