While there are two openings on the Red Sox coaching staff, manager Bobby Valentine said at his introductory press conference Thursday at Fenway Park he had not made any decisions on who would fill those spots or even if he would retain hitting coach Dave Magadan, bench coach DeMarlo Hale, third base coach Tim Bogar or bullpen coach Gary Tuck.

Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Valentine still needed to talk with those staff members still in place.

"We've got four coaches under contract and we think highly of all of them,'' Cherington said. "It needs to be the right fit for them, it needs to be the right fit for Bobby and Bobby will get a chance to talk to all of them very soon."

One name that surfaced as a potential candidate was that of former Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner, who managed the Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am League last season.

"He's been a friend for years," Valentine said. "We played together with the Dodgers. We played together in the Dominican Republic. I've watched his kids grow up and I respect his every opinion in baseball and in worldly matters. Whether or not Bill Buckner would be on the staff is a decision that Ben and I will talk about, or if anyone else will be on the staff, Ben and I will talk about to find out the right composition of a staff.

"It's not about friendship and it's not about who was here in the past,'' Valentine said. "It's about who it is that can do specific jobs that need to be done, who it is that can communicate the information I need communicated to me, and who it is that can communicate to the players in their respective fields best.

"If it's Bill, or someone else, we hope to have them on the staff."
