CAP CANA, Dominican Republic — Greetings from the David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic.

Big Papi is hosting Hall of Famers Bill Russell, Jim Rice and Eddie Murray along with Pedro Martinez, Jose Bautista, Johnny Damon, Luis Tiant, Sean Casey, Dave Robertson, Ricky Romero, Adam Jones, Ubaldo Jimenez, Andres Galarraga and Placido Polanco.

Teammates scheduled to be on hand include Tim Wakefield, Jose Iglesias and Michael Bowden.

We'll have reports here for a few days before headed to Dallas for the Winter Meetings. Have to admit, never expected the Red Sox would be naming their manager today. But we'll plenty on that later on.

As to other stuff:

• Bobby Valentine reportedly has a two-year contract. That would seem to make sense for everybody involved.

• No word yet on the coaching staff. But it seems likely that many of the holdovers — Dave Magadan, Tim Bogar, Gary Tuck and DeMarlo Hale — will be retained.

Hale could end up in Baltimore. Kind of a tough spot for a bench coach passed over for the manager's job to stay with the same team. Regardless, Hale is a terrific coach and the Sox would be lucky to have him back.
