DALLAS — It's the last day of the Winter Meetings and that means the Rule 5 Draft is upon us.

This is a draft of veteran minor leaguers not on 40-man rosters. A player taken has to remain on the major league roster all season or be offered back to his original team. It is fairly rare the Red Sox take anybody.

LHP Cesar Cabral, who was taken by the Rays last year and returned after spring training, is available again and could well be taken again.

We'll let you know what transpires. Ben Cherington also will wrap things up before leaving.

UPDATE: The Royals selected Cabral in the first round. The Red Sox took 3B Marwin Gonzalez from the Cubs.

UPDATE: Gonzalez is going to be traded an the Royals traded Cabral to the Yankees for cash.

UPDATE: The Red Sox traded Gonzalez to Houston for RHP Marco Duarte and cash.
