Valentine on his way to recruit Ortiz

CAP CANA, Dominican Republic — Bobby Valentine is wasting no time trying to improve the Red Sox.

Installed as manager yesterday, Valentine is on his way to the Dominican Republic now to meet with David Ortiz and participate in his charity golf event tomorrow.

"I haven't talked to Bobby [since he became manager] but I hope I will," Ortiz said this afternoon.

The Red Sox have offered Ortiz arbitration. He has until Wednesday to decide whether to accept. Ortiz said he would discuss the situation with his agent, Fern Cuza, early next week.

"I've said 1,000 times that I want to come back to the Red Sox," he said. "We'll see what happens."
