A few items of note:
• Jason Varitek's retirement press conference will be tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. NESN will televise it live. For those who have asked, the event is not open to the public.
• Several national outlets are reporting that baseball will add the second wild-card playoff team for this season. Given the depth in the American League, that is good news for the Red Sox.
The two wild-cards teams are expected to meet in a one-game playoff at the end of the season. The winner would advance to a Division Series.
"The fans come in and they take over the city. They're ruthless. They're vulgar. They cause trouble. They talk about your family. Swear at you. Who likes that? When people do that, it just gives you more incentive to beat them," he said.
Scott said when he was with the Orioles last season, he taunted Red Sox fans on his way home from the last game of the season.
"It was like someone shot their dog. I rolled down the window and I'm like, 'Ah, hah, sucks doesn't it, when someone laughs or makes fun of you when things aren't going your way,' " he said.
The Rays are at the Red Sox on April 13 for the home opener. So at least somebody will get booed louder than Josh Beckett.
