Commissioner Bud Selig issued the following statement today regarding the announced transaction between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs:

“I am pleased that the Cubs and the Red Sox have resolved this matter. It has always been my preference that clubs resolve matters like this amongst themselves, as they understand their unique circumstances better than anyone else could. Though the matter required time, both clubs demonstrated professionalism throughout their discussions, and I appreciate their persistence in finding common ground.”

According to Ben Cherington, the matter was settled between he and Theo Epstein. But it does appear that at least the threat of intercession by Selig helped get the deal done.
