LHP Cesar Cabral, a Rule 5 pick from the Red Sox organization by the Yankees (via a trade with the Royals) has an injured elbow and is scheduled for x-rays and an MRI on Saturday according to reports.

Until the injury, Cabral had a good chance to make the Yankees as their second lefty in the bullpen. That decision, it appears, will be delayed by a stint on the disabled list.

As a player selected in the Rule 5 draft for the second consecutive year, Cabral may become a free agent if he clears waivers and need not be returned to the Red Sox.

In related news, Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda admitted to having pain in the back of his shoulder today. That could be the cause of his diminished velocity this spring. The Yankees are awaiting the results of tests.

Meanwhile:

• Jamie Moyer made the Rockies rotation. He is 49.

• Barry Zito has allowed 10 earned runs on 16 hits (10 for extra bases) and five walks in his last 5.1 innings after getting hammered again tonight.

The Giants are still on the hook for $46 million with Zito. He gets $19 million this season, $20 million next and has a $7 buyout in 2014.
