FORT MYERS, Fla. — Ryan Kalish didn't wait to get in the batting cage this morning. He took his 10 swings as soon he could, taking confident cuts at balls on a tee.

The outfielder, who turns 24 later this month, swung a bat for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in November.

"Actually pretty strong," Kalish said when asked how he felt. "It was great."

Kalish has already started throwing. So now, after months of rehab work, he is starting to play baseball again. Those 10 swings will eventually evolve into soft toss, batting practice against coaches and batting practice against pitchers. Then getting into a game.

"It's great to be back doing baseball stuff," Kalish said.
