DETROIT It was more than a little strange to see ESPN's Terry Francona, in a suit, waiting outside the manager's office to go in and talk to Bobby Valentine.

As to other stuff:

Daniel Bard stayed behind in Fort Myers and on Wednesday went four innings against kids from the Gulf Coast League. "It was good for my confidence," he joked.

The Red Sox have an optional workout scheduled for Friday.

Red Sox owner John Henry called Valentine this morning to wish him well.

Valentine hosted a dinner for his coaching staff at the team hotel last night. One of the players, as yet unidentified, picked up the hefty check. One of Bobby's closest friends, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello, popped in to say hello. The Devils are in town to play the Red Wings.

Valentine said he constructed the lineup with Justin Verlander in mind, which probably explains why he wasn't afraid to use Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz back to back. But Verlander takes care of lefties (.234/.303/.364) about as well as he does righties (.237/.296/.357).

Finally, here's Curt Schilling's latest attack on Valentine:

Francona had a good take on the silly radio show controversy, joking that he wished he knew he could have done it.
