FORT MYERS, Fla. Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has been unusually critical of Bobby Valentine in recent days, both on ESPN and WEEI.

As Globe colleague Chad Finn ably pointed out in a recent column, Schilling is a hypocrite given his close connections to Terry Francona and his long-held belief that outsiders have no real idea of what is going on with a team.

Even WEEI's Kirk Minihane thinks Schilling should pipe down.

Josh Beckett, Daniel Bard, and other players have said Schilling's comments are off base.

Valentine may have the right answer. When asked today his reaction to Schilling's comments, the manager uttered one sentence.

"I just consider the source when I hear stuff like that," he said.

That may be the best advice of all.
