Are the Yankees for sale?

The New York Daily News ran a story today that suggested the Steinbrenner family may be interested in selling.

Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner swiftly issued a denial:

"I just read the Daily News story. It is complete fiction. Me and my family have no intention to sell the Yankees and expect it to be in the family for years to come."
As did Major League Baseball:

“Major League Baseball has received no indications from any representatives of the New York Yankees or anyone else that the Club is for sale.”

But this much is true: With the Dodgers selling for $2 billion, the Steinbrenners have to at least be wondering what their team is worth. And clearly Hal Steinbrenner is not as passionate about owning the team as his late father was.

King George would literally walk around and look for scraps of paper for people to pick up and he was involved in who the 25th player on the roster would be. Hal had nothing whatsoever to do with the team until his father became ill and somebody in their family had to handle the business.

In the end, everything has a price and if the Yankees are worth $2 billion, dividing that up and becoming private citizens could look awfully appealing to the Steinbrenner children.
