The Red Sox called up shortstop Jose Iglesias and optioned RHP Junichi Tazawa to Triple A Pawtucket.

Bobby Valentine said that Iglesias was called up to serve as an infield backup with Kevin Youkilis out of the lineup for the third consecutive game with a back injury.

Youkilis was not available for comment when the clubhouse was open to the media this afternoon. Valentine said he didn't know if Youkilis would end up on the disabled list.

There is no news regarding RHP Aaron Cook, who can opt out of his minor league contract today. Cook pitched for Pawtucket on Saturday, throwing 6.1 innings. So adding him to the roster today would accomplish little given that he would not be available.

The Sox could have Iglesias here as insurance for a day or two then add Cook to the roster on Wednesday. Clearly they aren't going to go with a five-man bullpen for very long.

As for Will Middlebrooks, the Mike Schmidt of the International League, he is dealing with a minor thumb injury.
