CHICAGO — The Red Sox have placed Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation. RHP Clayton Mortensen was recalled from Triple A Pawtucket.

Beckett said on Friday that he would speak to reporters on Saturday about his status. But he refused. Beckett also has refused to speak to reporters after his last two starts, both losses.

Valentine said Beckett could pitch if absolutely needed, such as in the postseason.

Clay Buchholz could start on Sunday on regular rest and that was what the Red Sox were hoping would happen. But Buchholz asked not to.

"That was Plan 1. But Clay felt he needed the extra days," Bobby Valentine said. "It that time of the season where guys can get a blow if they can work it in and I totally understand that."

Buchholz will now pitch on six days' rest on Tuesday against the Marlins.

Morales, who last started a game in 2009 when he was with the Rockies, met with reporters and said he would try to do his best.

"I don’t want to change anything," he said. "I’ll try and do my job. I’ll go as long as I can go."

Also, Carl Crawford threw from 110 feet today and Valentine said he is close to being ready for rehab games. ... RHP Aaron Cook will pitch for Pawtucket on Monday. ... Cody Ross will play for the PawSox tonight.
