David Ortiz climbing the home run charts
David Ortiz hit two more home runs last night. He's moving up a few lists:
Career home runs
47. Paul Konerko 409
48. Duke Snider 407
49. Andres Galarraga, Al Kaline 399
51. Dale Murphy, David Ortiz 398
Home runs among active players
1. Alex Rodriguez 641
2. Jim Thome 609
3. Chipper Jones 459
4. Albert Pujols 456
5. Jason Giambi 429
6. Andruw Jones 427
7. Paul Konerko 409
8. David Ortiz 398
Home runs in Red Sox history
1. Ted Williams 521
2. Carl Yastrzemski 452
3. Jim Rice 382
4. Dwight Evans 379
5. David Ortiz 340
At 36, does Ortiz have enough time left to get to 500? Probably not. But 450 homers would leave him in the top 40 all-time and that would be quite an accomplishment.
Given the ever-changing Red Sox lineup and assorted turmoil, what he has done this season should have him in the MVP discussion. It's hard to imagine where the Red Sox would be without him.
Based on those swings last night, that day off on Sunday came at just the right time.
* Yes, any discussion of home runs clearly comes with the caveat that Ortiz and many of these players played in a time of lawlessness when it came to PED use. But so did the pitchers. That's a debate for another time. For now, it's fun to watch the way Big Papi is swinging the bat.
