Arizona State shortstop Deven Marrero, the teamís first pick in the amateur draft, spent his last two summers playing for Cotuit in the Cape Cod League and got to know the passion New Englanders have for sports.

ďItís a great vibe up there. They all want to win and they want championships. Going up there and getting that feel for that at the Cape was awesome,Ē said Marrero, the 24th overall pick. ďAll the people who come to the Cape games and understand these players here are the future. It was pretty cool. Iím excited to be drafted by the Red Sox. Itís a great organization, and itís really an honor.Ē

Marrero, 21, is excited about getting a chance to play with Dustin Pedroia, an ASU alumnus.

ďI met him a couple times, and itís just awesome to have him as a guideline. Heís a great guy and a great one to follow," Marrero said on a conference call. ďHeís a unique player. I'd like to put myself in his category.Ē

Said Pedroia: ďIíve talked to him. Heís a good player and he can help us.Ē

University of Florida lefthander Brian Johnson, the second pick by the Red Sox, is excited about focusing on pitching as professional. He pitches and plays first base for the Gators, who are in the NCAA Super Regionals.

ďIíve never done that in my life,Ē Johnson said. ďIím looking forward to throwing and getting a regular routine.Ē

The Red Sox selected 14 more players on the draftís second day.

On Tuesday the Red Sox took:

Round 2: RHP Jamie Callahan (Dillon HS, Dillon, S.C.)
Round 3: RHP Austin Maddox (University of Florida)
Round 4: RHP Ty Buttrey (Providence HS, Charlotte, N.C.)
Round 5: RHP Mike Augliera (Binghamton)
Round 6: RHP Justin Haley (Fresno State)
Round 7: RHP Kyle Kraus (University of Portland)
Round 8: 1B Nathan Minnich (Shepherd University)
Round 9: INF Mike Miller (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo)
Round 10: C J.T. Watkins (Army)
Round 11: OF Jamal Martin (Dwyer HS, West Palm Beach, Fla.)
Round 12: 2B Mike Meyers (Silverado High School, Las Vegas, Nev.)
Round 13: RHP JB Wendelken (Middle Georgia JC)
Round 14: LHP Dylan Chavez (Mississippi)
Round 15: RHP Carson Fulmer (All Saints Academy, Lakeland, Fla.)

Notes: Watkins is the son of Red Sox area scout Danny Watkins ... Augliera, Kraus, Minnich, Miller and Watkins are seniors and therefore have little leverage in negotiations. Because the Red Sox have an MLB-mandated cap of $6.8 million for their first 12 picks, they can use the money saved on those seniors to improve their chances of signing Callahan, Buttrey and Martin. This is a strategy many teams employed, using their picks between rounds 3-11 on some players who aren't necessarily significant prospects who can be signed below the MLB-suggested bonus. Many of these players probably agreed to the parameters of their deals before they were taken ... The final 25 rounds will be today.
