The Red Sox selected Monmouth RHP Pat Light at No. 37. He was their second compensation pick for losing Jonathan Papelbon.

Three college players with the first three picks, that was a little unexpected. The draft continues on Tuesday with the second round and No. 61 overall. The Sox select at No. 87 then No. 118, etc.

Light is a 6-foot-6 starter who was 8-3, 2.40 in 14 starts. Over 101.1 innings he struck out 102 and walked 16 while allowing 84 hits. Light has a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and a very good slider.

Light as 20-0 as a high school pitcher and struggled at first at Monmouth, going 6-11 with a 4.94 ERA in his first two seasons.

Monmouth is a Division I school but at the lowest levels of that classification and Light did not face top-notch competition over the bulk of the season. He did pitch for Chatham in the Cape league last summer, starting four of 12 games and posting a 3.77 ERA.
