ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Red Sox had gone eight whole days without putting somebody on the disabled list. Clearly that could not last.
Join the club, Scott Atchison. He has forearm tightness and will be out for at least 15 days. Righthander Junichi Tazawa was called from from Triple A Pawtucket.
Atchison is not seriously injured beyond feeling some discomfort when he throws his cutter. If the Sox had a day off tomorrow, he might have skipped the DL. But there isn't a day off until July 26 and the Sox couldn't take the chance.
Atchison could probably use the break anyway. He has thrown 46 innings out of the pen, the most in the AL this season. He has a 1.76 earned run average.
Tazawa, 26, did not allow a run in five relief appearances with the Sox from April 20-30. He leads Triple-A relief qualifiers with an average of 11.91 strikeouts per 9.0 innings in 25 relief appearances for the Paw Sox.
In his last six appearances for Pawtucket, Tazawa struck out 16 over 6.2 scoreless innings
• Ryan Sweeney (left hamstring) is likely unavailable today. "Another day is probably the way to go with him," Bobby Valentine said.
• Adrian Gonzalez, as he hoped, woke up feeling fine and is back in the lineup after missing two days with a sore lower back.
"I was a little surprised, actually. Pleasantly surprised," Valentine said.
• Valentine has not been told officially that Carl Crawford will be activated on Monday. But still seems to be the plan. Bobby V said he had not put any thought into where Crawford will hit in the lineup.
Given that Crawford has not played all season, Valentine also has modest expectations.
"I'm not expecting any immediate impact. Just expecting one of nine, a guy who can go out there and be a contributor," the manager said. "I hope he's healthy. I think if he's healthy, he'll do fine."
