OAKLAND Dustin Pedroia jammed his right thumb trying to make a diving catch in the outfield on Tuesday night and is out of the lineup today.

He will be checked out in Boston on Thursday.

"After the game I was sore and then today I'm pretty sore," Pedroia said. "It's not in the area where I first got hurt. I think when I dove for that ball in right field, I don't know what happened. Bobby [Valentine] wanted me to not play today because we have an off day tomorrow. Hopefully everything will be OK."

Pedroia said it's on the back side of his thumb. He tore a muscle on the inner part of his thumb on May 28 and missed six games. He has hit .210 with six extra-base hits in 105 at-bats since.

"It's pretty frustrating," Pedroia said. "I have a high pain tolerance, but I don't know."

Pedroia was told not to swing a bat today. "If they need me, I'll hit," he said.

The Red Sox have Nick Punto at second base and will play Mauro Gomez at third base. Gomez has never played third base in the majors and last played there in the minors in 2009 in Class A ball.

In 71 games playing third base in the minors from 2004-09, Gomez committed 31 errors, then was converted into a first baseman.

"He came up as a third baseman, been working out there all year," said Valentine when asked why Gomez is playing third base. "I guess as much [experience] as anybody else who's on our roster. ... It is what it is. What are we going to do?"

With Aaron Cook, a sinkerballer, on the mound for the Red Sox, this could be quite an interesting game.

Brent Lillibridge has played 11 games at third base during his major league career, starting seven of them. He started six games (48 innings) at third for the White Sox this season without committing an error. But Lillibridge also is hitting .155 this season.
