ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — To make room for Jacoby Ellsbury on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, the Red Sox designated Justin Germano for assignment.

Germano appeared in one game, the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Yankees. He pitched 5.2 scoreless innings.

The Red Sox will have to make another move on Saturday to activate Clay Buchholz. That will probably be a position player. Mauro Gomez and Brett Lillibridge would be the leading candidates.

Also:

• Andrew Bailey threw a bullpen today, all fastballs. He said his arm felt fine. Bailey will need a series of bullpens, then some live BP sessions than 8-10 innings in games before he's ready for the majors. So that's probably late August at the earliest.

• Cody Ross was a little baffled not be in the lineup. Bobby Valentine said he would be in their tomorrow against David Price, a lefty. With Ellsbury back, the Sox could start to use Ross and Ryan Sweeney as a platoon. That was the intention back in March.

Ross is hitting .238 with a .750 OPS against righties. Against lefties, he is hitting .328 with a 1.205 OPS. Sweeney is hitting .111 with a .325 OPS against lefties. He is hitting .302 with a .763 OPS against righties.
