Here's how far along some injured Red Sox players are in their rehabs:

Carl Crawford (started rehab assignment June 23): 8 games, 31 plate appearances. If the Sox go the full 20 days on his rehab assignment, he will return on July 13 against Tampa Bay.

Jacoby Ellsbury (started rehab assignment June 29): 5 games, 19 plate appearances. Based on a 20-day rehab stint, the latest he would return is July 19. But Ellsbury went through a full spring training and theoretically should be able to return sooner.

Scott Podsednik (started rehab assignment June 29): 4 games, 16 plate appearances. He last played on Tuesday, so presumably Podsednik is ready to return today unless he suffered some sort of setback. Bobby Valentine said on Wednesday that Podsednik was "very close."

Ryan Sweeney (started rehab assignment on July 6): 4 plate appearances. He played in his last major league game on June 16, so Sweeney shouldn't need more than another game or two if he is healthy.

Rich Hill: He has started throwing at distance and that will eventually lead to throwing in the bullpen and then a rehab assignment. Do not expect him back in the majors until some time in August.

Andrew Bailey: He threw off the mound then was shut down from doing that. Now he he is building back up. From there, Bailey would need 8-10 innings in the minors, which will take 15-20 days. He may not be back until late August or September.

Clay Buchholz: Information has been scant. He was last said to have returned to working out. Buchholz last pitched on June 19, so he is going to miss at least a month and will need at least one rehab game or two. Best guess is late July or early August.

Daisuke Matsuzaka: Valentine said they wanted to leave Matsuzaka sidelined until his neck pain had completely gone away. It's anybody's guess how long that will take. In theory he could return later this month or maybe he never pitches for the Sox again.

John Lackey: He is throwing off the mound and could get into a game by September as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Whether that is a major league game is questionable but it's not out of the question.
