Red Sox announce minor league award winners

RHP Brandon Workman was named the minor league pitcher of the year by the Red Sox. He was 10-8 with a 3.50 ERA and 130 strikeouts over 138.2 innings in 25 starts for High A Salem and Double A Portland.

Workman was the team's second round pick in 2010 out of Texas.

SS Xander Bogaerts was named the player of the year. He hit .307/.373/.523 for Salem and Portland with 20 home runs, 37 doubles, 3 triples and 81 RBIs. He also drew 44 walks over 127 games.

Bogaerts hit .326/.351/.598 in 23 games for Portland. He was selected for the Futures Game and was a Carolina League All-Star.

The defensive player of the year was OF Jackie Bradley Jr., a center fielder with Salem and Portland. Bradley also hit .315 with 55 extra-base hits, 87 walks and 63 RBIs in 128 games. He, too, was a Carolina League All-Star. Bradley was a supplemental first round pick in 2011.

3B Garin Cecchini was named the base runner of the year. He was 51 of 57 in steals for Single A Greenville. The former sixth round pick (in 2010) hit .305/.394/.433.

RHP Keivin Heras and OF Manuel Margot were named the Latin program pitcher and player of the year. They played in the Dominican Summer League. Heras was 6-1, 2.03 in 13 starts. Margot hit .285 with 45 RBIs in 68 games. He also stole 33 bases.

Daniel Nava won the Lou Gorman Award for dedication and perseverance. Nava was a manager at Santa Clara University before playing junior college ball and returning to the school and hitting .395.

Undrafted of college, he was discovered in the independent Golden League and made his debut with the Red Sox in 2010. Nava was taken off the 40-man roster and not invited to spring training in 2012. But he returned to the majors on May 10 and has played 78 games this season.
