ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — You know the season is winding down when Bobby Valentine is at second base during batting practice turning double plays with Dustin Pedroia.

But we press on with a few notes:

• The Sox will wait for Friday before making any roster additions. Pawtucket lost the Triple A championship game on Tuesday night.

• Valentine sounds like he wants to play Pedro Ciriaco in center field on Thursday. The Sox want to test his versatility and at the same time give Jacoby Ellsbury a night off from playing on the turf.

• Mike Aviles hasn't played the last three games and isn't in the lineup tonight. Valentine said he regrets that, but doesn't believe it would be fair to put Aviles at third base after he played shortstop all season.

It's understandable that the organization wants to use this time to see young players. That makes the most sense. But it's unfortunate Aviles is the victim because he was a steady player all season and one of the few position players who stayed off the DL.

• Will Middlebrooks fielded a few grounders in BP and made some easy throws to first base. His right hand is healthy enough to throw, but swinging a bat remains a few weeks away.
