FORT MYERS, Fla. Daniel Bard is about to throw a simulated game to see if some mechanical issues have been straightened out.

This has become an ongoing story. There was hope early in camp that Bard was turning the corner and looking at last season in the rear view mirror. The Sox have kept him out of games recently to work on his delivery.

In other news:

John Farrell said Jonny Gomes got clearance to play even though he still has three stitches in his left knee.

"From a medical standpoint the laceration has closed enough to get him back in the swing of things. Fortunate it wasn't more serious," Farrell said.

Farrell said David Ortiz was going through treatment and stretching and then was going to attempt to run the bases. The last time he tried, on Sunday, he felt soreness in the Achilles' heel and the Sox had to back off.

Shortstop and former top pick Deven Morrero was sent back to the minor league camp.

"He handled himself great," Farrell said. "When he was on the field and handled every chance routinely. The thing that stands out is genuine confidence in not being in awe of this situation."

Farrell believes the team will come up with a hybrid first base/left field player before camp is over. Daniel Nava, Mike Carp and Lyle Overbay remain the top candidates.

Players Association executive director Michael Weiner held a 90-minute information session with the players.

Weiner said while the drug issue was discussed it did not take up a majority of the time. Draft pick compensation for free-agents, travel and many other issues were discussed. It was Weiner's 11th stop in spring training. Dustin Pedroia, who was very direct about stricter drug testing the day before, met with Weiner individually.
