Stephen Drew cleared by specialist

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew has been cleared to resume baseball activities.

Drew, out since March 7 with a concussion, traveled to Pittsburgh to be examined by a specialist, Dr. Michael Collins.

Drew will start throwing and taking batting practice. There is no date set for playing in games.

Drew will not play in any major league spring training games to protect the team's ability to backdate his stint on the seven-day concussion disabled list. He would have to miss a minimum of three days but theoretically only one game because of days off. The major league season officially starts a week from Sunday.

There still seems to be little chance that Drew will ready for Opening Day. Jose Iglesias would start in his place if that is the case.

The Red Sox are hoping Pedro Ciriaco (back spasms) can play in Saturday's game.
