SCORE: Orioles 8, Red Sox 7

RECORD: 13-11-1

BREAKDOWN: Down, 7-1, the Sox sent 12 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and scored six runs. Jonathan Diaz had a two-run single before Jackie Bradley Jr.’s single to left field tied the score. But Danny Valencia, who played 10 games for the Red Sox last season, hit a home run over everything off Terry Doyle in the top of the ninth.

THUMBS UP: Will Middlebrooks was 2 for 3 with two hard-hit balls, a single and a double to right-center that hopped into the bullpen. The double came off hard-throwing Orioles prospect Kevin Gausman, who had struck out Mike Napoli and Jarrod Saltalamacchia before Middlebrooks came up.

THUMBS DOWN: Daniel Bard, who had not allowed a run this spring, had a rough seventh inning. He gave up three runs on two hits, a hit batter, a walk, and a balk. He said he was too late making an adjustment in his delivery. The balk, which was supposed to be a pickoff play at third base, cost Bard a run. “There was a little miscommunication on that," said manager John Farrell. "I’m not putting that on him." Bard also opened a cut on the base of his right thumb, the result of the fingernail on his index finger digging as he releases the ball. By the time the inning ended, he had blood all over the side of his uniform pants. Bard had tried super glue (something many pitchers use) to close the cut earlier in the week, but it opened up.

MEDICAL REPORT: David Ortiz took 50 swings in the batting cage, his first baseball activity after a nine-day layoff because of inflammation in his right heel. “We’ll see how he comes out of it [Wednesday] when he reports in,” Farrell said ... Outfielder Mitch Maier had an MRI on his left wrist and has what is being described as a "severe sprain." He is out for at least a week. Maier was injured making a diving catch Friday.

AROUND THE BASES: Those returning to Fort Myers Tuesday included Pedro Martinez and team owner John Henry.

NEXT GAME: Wednesday against the Yankees in Tampa at 1:05 p.m. The Sox will start lefthander Felix Doubront, with Clayton Mortensen, Andrew Miller Andrew Bailey and Joel Hanrahan to follow. The Yankees will start lefty Vidal Nuno, a minor leaguer making his second start of the spring. The game is on ESPN2.
