SCORE: Pirates 5, Red Sox 3

RECORD: Red Sox 14-14-1

BREAKDOWN: The Sox scored three runs off Pirates starter Jeff Locke, a North Conway, N.H., native, and took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning. Junichi Tazawa, who had already pitched 1 2/3 innings, got an out before walking two. Anthony Carter came in and allowed two hits, one a two-run homer by Pedro Alvarez that gave the Pirates the lead.

THUMBS UP: Clay Buchholz went 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He has given up two earned runs over 18 2/3 innings this spring and struck out 16. “It feels good to feel good,” he said. Said John Farrell: “Again, another very solid outing for Clay.”

THUMBS DOWN: Shane Victorino was 0 for 4 and didn’t get the ball out of the infield. Counting all games — Grapefruit League, WBC and Team USA exhibitions — he is 7 of 45 (.155) this spring.

MEDICAL REPORT: Shortstop Stephen Drew (concussion) played catch, fielded some grounders and took batting practice on the field before the game. He has taken strides in the last few days but no day has been picked for a game. … Infielder Pedro Ciriaco, out since March 15 with back spasms, worked out and will play in a minor league game on Sunday. … Lefthanders Franklin Morales (back) and Craig Breslow (shoulder) are throwing but not close to getting back on the mound.

AROUND THE BASES: Saltalamacchia, a switch hitter with much better statistics from the left side, is 5 of 15 batting from the right side this spring with three doubles. … Former Sox reliever Mark Melancon struck out Mike Napoli and Will Middlebrooks in a scoreless fifth inning. He has allowed one run over nine innings this spring. … The Pirates bullpen dominated the Red Sox for 5 innings: 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts.

NEXT GAME: Sunday at 1:05 p.m. against the Phillies in Clearwater. The Red Sox will pitch righthander Brandon Workman, a 24-year-old who was their second round pick in the 2010 draft. The Phillies are scheduled to start Cliff Lee with Jonathan Papelbon among those in relief. The game will be on NESN and WEEI.
