Game report: Red Sox 5, Pirates 2

SCORE: Red Sox 5, Pirates 2

RECORD: 4-4

BREAKDOWN: The Sox beat the Pirates for the second straight day. They scored three runs in the first inning off Jeff Locke. Mike Napoli has an RBI single in his first game of the spring. Stephen Drew added an RBI double.

THUMBS UP: Jon Lester threw three shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out two with a walk. He incorporated his change-up, curveball and cutter. “It was nice to break them all out and get good results,” he said. “It’s always nice when you’re working on things to get good results and you can build on that.”

THUMBS DOWN: Steven Wright allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings. Both runs came in the eighth inning. Wright left with the bases loaded. Alex Wilson came in and got Oscar Tejeda (a former Red Sox prospect) to line back to the mound. Wright flipped to first to end the inning.

MEDICAL REPORT: Lefthanded reliever Craig Breslow, idled by shoulder soreness, will start a throwing program on Saturday. It will likely take 10 days before he can throw off a mound. Breslow still has time to be ready in time for Opening Day.

AROUND THE BASES: Rubby De La Rosa struck out two in two scoreless inning. He has thrown four scoreless innings this spring. … Dustin Pedroia was 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBIs. … Shane Victorino was 0 for 2, grounding into two double plays. He is 0 for 9 this spring and went to the batting cage after he came out of the game. … Pedro Ciriaco is 4 of 12 this spring, picking up where he left off last season. … Jeremy Farrell, son of the Red Sox manager, drew a walk in the eighth inning. The 26-year-old infield prospect was added to the roster for the game.

NEXT GAME: Saturday vs. Minnesota at Hammond Stadium in Fort Meyers at 1:05 p.m. Clay Buchholz, in his first start this spring, will face Kyle Gibson. The game will be on WEEI.
