SCORE: Red Sox 2, Twins 1

RECORD: 5-4

BREAKDOWN: In the first game of the vaunted Mayor’s Cup series, the Red Sox extended their winning streak to three games. They managed only six hits against seven Minnesota pitches but made them count. One was an opposite field home run by Juan Carlos Linares in the second inning. Ryan Sweeney added an RBI single in the fifth.

THUMBS UP: Will Middlebrooks returned to the lineup after missing two games following the pain he felt in his right wrist on Wednesday. He was 0 for 3 but made contact twice and, most importantly, felt fine physically.

THUMBS DOWN: Lyle Overbay was 0 for 3 and is now 1 for 12 with five strikeouts. Mix in the Northeastern game and he is 1 for 14. If Overbay makes the team as a backup first baseman, it would be because of his glove. But he needs to show something with the bat and hasn’t yet.

MEDICAL REPORT: Outfield prospect Alex Hassan got some good news. An MRI on his fractured left foot was positive and he has been cleared to start hitting and running again. He took a few swings off a tee on Friday.

AROUND THE BASES: Shane Victorino is 0 for 11 but did draw a walk that helped lead to the winning run. He asked to play the day game after the night game to get some extra plate appearances. “Trying to get into a rhythm,” he said. “Work in progress.” Victorino, who has left camp for the World Baseball Classic, will wear No. 50 for Team USA to represent his native state of Hawaii. … The Sox and Twins will play seven more times this spring.

NEXT GAME: The Yankees come to JetBlue Park for their annual visit on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. The game will be on NESN and WEEI-FM. Ryan Dempster will oppose Adam Warren. Brett Gardner, Eduardo Nunez, Juan Rivera and Austin Romine are the only notable players on the travel roster for the battered Yankees.
