BREAKDOWN: Down 2-0, the Sox scored three runs in the fourth inning on a home run by David Ross and thrree more in the seventh as Jeremy Hazelbaker (double) and Pedro Ciriaco (single) drove in runs. John Lackey and five relievers held the Rays to five hits and two walks.
THUMBS UP: Ross came into the game 0 for before he took lefthander Matt Moore over the fence in left center with one out. He also was playing with a sore left wrist. “That felt pretty good, that swing,” Ross said.
THUMBS DOWN: With David Ortiz probably headed to the disabled list, Ryan Lavarnway could make a play for a roster spot. But he is 3 for 21 in Grapefruit League games with one extra-base hit and has struck out five times. He was 0 for 3 on Sunday. Lavarnway’s biggest game came against Puerto Rico’s WBC team. He was 3 for 3 with two doubles.
MEDICAL REPORT: Stephen Drew is experiencing what John Farrell said were "mild symptoms" from the concussion he suffered on Thursday. Drew did some physical activity on Saturday to gauge his readiness and still had symptoms. So he will rest today. Before he can play, Drew would have to pass an on-line test administered by Major League Baseball. … LHP Franklin Morales has hit a plateau in his recovery from a sore lower back. Morales reported to the clubhouse Sunday morning but left within a few hours with a brace wrapped around his back.
AROUND THE BASES: Lackey allowed two runs on four hits over 3.2 innings. He was pleased with throwing 66 pitches and getting up and down four times. Lackey also has shown good command, walking only three in 9.2 innings. “It’s been pretty good. It’s definitely still coming. It’s not there yet,” Lackey said. “I’ve been around the zone. You can throw strikes and not throw it where you want exactly sometimes, too. It’s still a work in progress.” … Junichi Tazawa threw a scoreless eighth inning. He has retired 10 of the last 11 batters he has faced. … The game drew 7,069, the first sellout the Rays have had at Charlotte Sports Park this season.
