NEW YORK — Jacoby Ellsbury is out of the Red Sox lineup for a second consecutive night because of a left groin strain.

The center fielder was injured in Philadelphia on Thursday when he stole second base in the eighth inning, giving him a team record five steals in the game.

“Still day to day. He’s improved, but yet not ready to go,” Farrell said.

The team is off on Monday, so the Sox could give Ellsbury four consecutive days off and hope he returns on Tuesday against Texas at Fenway Park.

“The improvement that Jacoby has shown today over yesterday is very encouraging” Farrell said. “Not ruling out [Sunday] as his availability. But, still, we’ve got to monitor and check in on him each day he comes to park here. The improvement is encouraging today."

Also:

• Shane Victorino, out since May 21 with hamstring and back injuries, took batting practice on the field and is tentatively scheduled to start a minor league rehabilitation assignment on Monday, likely with Pawtucket.

“The thing that we’re gong through right now is just reconditioning,” Farrell said. “That lower back, left hip, left hamstring, that’s all being tested with increased activity. How he responds to that running, that will have a direct impact on when and how long his rehab assignment will take place.”

Farrell said the concern is rushing Victorino to a point where he has a setback. But he remains on track to be activated on Wednesday.

“As he ramps up the intensity, we’re going to adjust if need be to how he responds to that,” Farrell said.

• Will Middlebrooks took BP in the cage and then grounders on the field. He will take BP on the field on Sunday. He remains on track for a return from the DL on June 8, the day he is eligible.
