Stat of the Day: Gomes is 11 of 29 in his last six games with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs.

Notes: The Sox carry the best record in the American League into Comerica Park and a four-game series against the Central-leading Tigers. The Sox were 5-5 against the Tigers last season and are 24-12 against them over the last five seasons, 10-7 at Comerica. ... Lackey is facing the Tigers for the first time since May 16, 2010. He is 6-2, 4.01 in 10 career starts against Detroit, 5-1, 4.09 in five starts at Comerica. ... Alvarez was originally signed by the Red Sox out of Venezuela in 2005. He was traded to Florida after the 2009 season (along with lefthander Hunter Jones) for outfielder Jeremy Hermida. The trade did not work out particularly well for any of the trio. Jones was released by the Marlins in 2010 and is now playing independent ball. Hermida was released by the Sox in August of 2010 and has played with four organizations since. Alvarez never made it beyond Double A with the Marlins and was signed by the Tigers over the winter as a minor league free agent. He was 5-4, 2.78 in 13 starts for Triple A Toledo before being called up. This is his second start. ... The Tigers are 23-12 at home and have won 56 of their last 79 games at Comerica. ... The Sox are 21-15 on the road this season with a run differential of +52. ... Iglesias had his hit streak snapped on Wednesday. But he has reached base safely in 22 consecutive games. That's tied with Pedroia for the longest such streak by a Red Sox player this season.

Song of the Day: "Devil With the Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly" by Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels.
