Game over: Red Sox 10, Tigers 6 The Red Sox didn't need to use new closer Koji Uehara with a five-run lead in the ninth, so Andrew Miller was able to handle the task. The Red Sox won despite another lackluster outing by Jon Lester, who got the win despite allowing nine hits and five runs in 5.2 innings.
Shane Victorino had four hits and knocked in five runs. Miller put two on base and a run scored on a Prince fielder grounder. Game was played in 3:16 before 41,126 at Comerica.
Top 9th: Red Sox 10, Tigers 5 - The Red Sox hold on to their four-run lead as we enter the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Drew singled and scored on Jose Iglesias' single to center and error by the center fielder. Iglesias and Drew with three hits.
Bottom 8th: Red Sox 9, Tigers 5 - Craig Breslow pitches a second consecutive effective inning.
Top 8th: Red Sox 9, Tigers 5 - A Salty walk and Drew double set the stage for a lot of activity at the plate. After Ellsbury was walked intentionally to load the bases, Victorino reached on a fielder's choice grounder when Salty was called safe on a throw to the plate. Replay showed Pena blocked the plate and prevented his hand from getting in, but Salty was called safe. Drew then scored on a wild pitch on another close play at the plate.
Bottom 7th: Red Sox 7, Tigers 5 - Miguel Cabrera singled (and almost got thrown out at first base by Shane Victorino), but The Tigers couldn't do much more against Craig Breslow.
Top 7th: Red Sox 7, Tigers 5 - Nothing doing for Red Sox.
Bottom 6th: Red Sox 7, Tigers 5 - Lester leaves after two outs and 106 pitches. He struck out two batters before he left but had walked Andy Dirks who was on first base and Junichi Tazawa in to pitch. He got Omar Infante to fly to center to end the inning.
Top 6th: Red Sox 7, Tigers 5 - Shane Victorino is now 4-for-4 with four RBI after driving in Jose Iglesias (triple) with a cushion run.
Bottom 5th: Red Sox 6, Tigers 5 - Nice comeback by the Bengals. Andy Dirks led off with a solo homer to right. Brayan Pena popped a single to right and with two outs. Hunter singled to setting the stage for Miguel Cabrera's 20th homer. He now has 74 RBI.
Top 5th: Red Sox 6, Tigers 1 - Napoli singled but then got doubled off first on Nava's fly ball.
Bottom 4th: Red Sox 6, Tigers 1 - Prince Fielder has now made four outs in his last two at-bats. Another grounded-into double play.
Top 4th: Red Sox 6, Tigers 1 - Back to back hits by Salty and Drew and an infield single by Jose Iglesias, this 14th of the season loaded the bases. Ellsbury knocked in two with a double and Victorino and Pedroia singled to score two more.
Top 3rd: Red Sox 2, Tigers 1 - Sox re-take the lead after Ellsbury and Victorino hit back-to-back singles with one out. The run scored on Pedroia's ground ball out.
Bottom 2nd: Red Sox 1, Tigers 1 - Brayan Pena owns Jon Lester. After a 2-out RBI single he's now 5-for-12 with 4 RBI. Lester allowed an infield single to third by Victor Martinez as Iglesias made a fine play deep at third but his throw was on one-hop which Mike Napoli couldn't scoop, Peralta, Thursday's hero, singled. But Lester got the next two batters and appeared to be getting out of it before Pena struck.
Top 2nd: Red Sox 1, Tigers 0 - The Red Sox mustered a leadoff single by Mike Napoli, but the next three batters made outs.
Bottom 1st: Red Sox 1, Tigers 0 - Torii Hunter doubled to left and moved to third on Miguel Cabrera's single, but Jon Lester was bailed out on a ground ball double play by Prince Fielder.
Top 1st: Red Sox 1, Tigers 0 - Shane Victorino homered off Doug Fister. Dustin Pedroia also singled.
