FORT MYERS, Fla. — Jon Lester starts his first spring training game today. The all-but-official Opening Day starter will face the Rays at 1:05 p.m.
The Sox started Clay Buchholz on Sunday. Lester, John Lackey, Felix Doubront (in a minor league game) and Jake Peavy will follow. For the first time all spring, the Sox have their five starters lined up.
Does that mean it will be Lester, Lackey and Doubront out of the gate? It very well could. Doubront has pitched well this spring and deserves to be there. The Sox also seem likely to give Peavy extra time to get ready given his assorted odd injuries this spring.
Buchholz is not the expected No. 5 starter. But how the Sox line up the first time is not as important as how each individual pitcher is prepared. The Sox need to find a way to keep Buchholz healthy and easing him into the season could be part of the plan.
