FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox play the Yankees today and theoretically that's a big deal. Old rivals and all that.
But David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino, Koji Uehara, Jon Lester, and other notable players will remain at JetBlue Park for a workout. The Yankees also have players to rest after sending a split squad to Panama for two games. Jacoby Ellsbury isn't expected to play because of a strained calf muscle.
The Sox are sending a roster that includes Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Mike Carp, Johnny Gomes and Ryan Lavarnway. Felix Doubront will pitch.
Long gone are the days when George Steinbrenner would order his manager to load up the lineup against the Red Sox in spring training because winning was important.
But it's always fun to see the teams play and the game is on ESPN at 1:05 p.m.
Our Globe stories today:
For Grady Sizemore maybe the future is now after an impressive game on Monday.
The notebook has the Sox making some cuts and John Lackey getting some work in.
