FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox announced late Sunday night that they have signed David Ortiz to a one-year extension for 2015 with a club/vesting option for 2016 and a club option for 2017.

If the final two years are picked up, Ortiz would be 41 at the end of the contract. The extension, sources said, is worth close to $16 million for 2015.

The vesting option or 2016 will be based on plate appearances.

“With this agreement, we have near certainty that David Ortiz will finish his career in a Red Sox uniform, which is something we have all wanted and that we are all proud of,” Red Sox owner John Henry said in a statement released by the team. “It is difficult to describe David’s contributions to our city both on the field and off the field, and we are so proud to have this ambassador of our game with us as he continues on this road to Cooperstown.”

Ortiz and general manager Ben Cherington will meet with reporters in Sarasota before Monday's game against the Orioles to discuss the deal.

Ortiz, 38, has led the team to three World Championships and has been an All-Star nine times in his 11 years with the Red Sox.

Ortiz hit .309 with 30 home runs and 103 RBI in 137 games last season. The designated hitter's.564 slugging percentage ranked third among all major league qualifiers behind Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera (.636) and Baltimore’s Chris Davis (.634).

Last October, Ortiz started all 16 games en route to Boston’s third World Series championship, hitting .353 while topping postseason leaders in home runs (5), total bases (36), walks (16), and times on base (34).

Ortiz is 69 home runs shy of 500 in his career. This new contract could put him in a position to reach that milestone.
