Sox place Breslow, Wright on disabled list

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox tonight placed left hander Craig Breslow and righthander Steven Wright on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 21.

Breslow was listed as having a mild left shoulder strain. Wright is recovering from January surgery on a sports hernia.

This marks the second season in a row Breslow will start the season on the DL with a shoulder injury. He was out until May 5 last season with tendinitis. Breslow pitched well after his return and the Sox seem to be taking the same approach, although with less time away.

Bresow could be activated as soon as April 5 and miss only four games.

The Sox are expected to make their remaining cuts on Friday. They have 33 players on the active spring training roster.

With Breslow out, a spot opens up in the bullpen. Brandon Workman would seem to be the primary candidate with Francisco Cordero, Tommy Layne, Brayan Villarreal and Drake Britton also in the mix.

If the Red Sox decide to have Workman pitch in the Triple A rotation, they could go with Britton as third lefthander.

Catcher Ryan Lavarnway, infielder Mike McCoy and outfielder Corey Brown are headed to Pawtucket barring injury. The Sox also have to decide whether to take Grady Sizemore or Jackie Bradley Jr. as their center fielder. It would be an upset at this point if Sizemore was not the choice.

Workman, Britton, Lavarnway, Sizemore and Bradley are 40-man roster players. Adding Cordero, Layne, Villarreal, McCoy or Brown would require an additional roster move.
